Meltblown technology Developed in the 1960s, it is based on an Exxon patent, and polypropylene is the most frequent initial raw material.  The meltblown process is also a one-step process that is similar to the spunbond process, except that the fibers are shortened as they are extruded, and then blown onto a moving belt.  Low viscosity polymers are extruded into a high-velocity hot air stream upon leaving the spinneret.  This scatters the melt, solidifies it, and breaks it up into a fibrous fine-fibered, white, opaque web featuring random distribution of fibers that exhibit excellent hand (texture or touch) and moderate strength properties. 

The meltblown nonwoven fabric may be produced in white and also in other color, hydrophobic or hydrophilic, calendered or non-calendered, and it may be provided with a persistent stable electrostatic charge.  In terms of tensile strength, meltblown fabrics are relatively weaker.  The process does offer lower production costs and the flexibility to combine with spunbonding and other processing technologies to create composite fabrics.   

Fabrics produced by the meltblown technology are suitable for use as filtering materials and as wipes; that is, industrial sorbents for trapping oils and aqueous solutions.
